Fusion Garage’s Joo Joo Hits FCC, Reveals Plenty

Remember the Joo Joo? Of course you do; we just covered it, after all. Letting you know that the future tablet from Fusion Garage got a bit of an upgrade in the User Interface department, before it’s ultimate release later this month. But, you know what’s better than knowing your latest gadget won’t have a bland, boring desktop? Getting to look at its insides, thanks to some do

cuments found in the FCC’s databanks. And, believe it or not, the Joo Joo has some good things going for it.

Joo Joo FCC 540x343

First and foremost, we’ve got the NVIDIA Ion combined with Intel’s Atom N270. Second, despite the fact we’ve heard from Fusion Garage themselves that the Joo Joo won’t be shipping at the end of March with 3G on board, the FCC reveals that there is indeed a 3G card in there, so maybe something is changing. However, while we love the combination of Ion and the Atom N270, we have to admit that we’re not really sure the battery life is going to be anything to write home about. While the Joo Joo’s main competition is primed at a 10 hour battery life, there’s some speculation going around that the Joo Joo will barely make 5.

It’s going to just be a few short weeks before Fusion Garage unleashes their tablet, so before long we’ll be able to give you all the gory details, instead of banking on FCC documentation. Though, after seeing the upgraded User Interface and knowing that an application store of some sort is shipping with the fully HD-capable tablet makes our hearts flutter a bit. Essentially, we just can’t wait to get our hands on a new gadget.

Sony EVIL Touchscreen Camera Gets Software Leaked Through Pictures

We love gadgets with cool names. And while Sony’s BLOGGIE may take the crown for strangest, the EVIL camera takes the cake for awesome. The EVIL part stands for (Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens), and that basically does a great job of breaking down the core elements of this camera. While the looks may not attract the most hardcore of consumer, it may have enough in the software end of things to make anyone on the fence change their mind, given enough hands-on time with the device.

Sony EVIL camera

About a month ago, at the PMA show, images of the EVIL camera came to light. And while they did a great job of showcasing the camera proper, there were some question floating around on how snapping photos would be handled, among a few others. Well, it’s all been answered now, as the latest images of the EVIL’s methods have come out, and show a touchscreen. It also shows us that photographers will also be able to save images in the JPEG and RAW modes. Plus, there’s an APS-C sized sensor in this little guy, which is pretty fantastic on Sony’s part.

Sony EVIL tutorial 540x302

Despite the fact that the EVIL is just a camera, Sony has found themselves giving enough to place an onboard tutorial for you, if you do decide that this is the camera for you. While the EVIL camera may not seem like it could be a real DSLR competitor, from what we can see in specifications, we’re wondering if Sony could find a reasonable price tag to go along with this gadget, and therefore definitely woo some potential buyers. Unfortunately, there’s no word on pricing or availability at this point.

Intendix Meshes the Line Between Brain and Computer, For a Price

Welcome to the future, ladies and gentlemen. What we have here, by definition, is exactly where technology should be going. While we love all our gadgets, from the smallest magnets to the largest LED TVs, it’s this kind of tech that makes our spines tingle. After all, even if it may not work as well as it does in all those science-fiction movies, it’s sure going in the right direction. Intendix wants to make it possible for those who may not be able to speak, to finally get what they want to say out to those around them, and we can’t help but love the process.

Indendix Brain 540x356

The Intendix computer was debuted during CeBIT 2010, but there were some key details missing from the presentation. The technology itself was created by the Austrian Guger Technologies, or g.tec, to better improve the lives of those with any kind of locked-in syndrome, or any other kind of situation that may prevent someone from telling people what they want or need. And yes, you are right about what it does: the system is a thought-to-computer network, which works by placing an EEG helmet on the user. From that point on, the user can “text,” or trigger an alarm if needed. The system is also able to speak the text out-loud, copy or print text to or from an email, or to issue commands to an external device. The system works at a rate of about five to 10 characters per minute.

There’s no other way to look at this: it’s mind control, but in a far more healthy, a

nd lucrative fashion. Trying to help others is never a bad thing, and we’re hoping that the Intendix makes it to as many people as it can who need it. However, like any other thing that’s needed, there’s always a price tag. What we’re looking at now is about $12,250 for a single unit. There’s also no word on widespread distribution or manufacturing, but hopefully that gets cleared up soon.

Apple’s iPhone OS 4.0 Brings Full-On Solution

Whether or not you consider this three years in the making or not, this rumor has several thousand people out there breathing a large sigh of relief. One of the most highly regarded (missing) features on the iPhone, it seems that times are certainly changing, as Apple have gone ahead and included the feature into the new build of their Operating System. Oh, did we forget to mention? This is just a rumor.

Apple logo

Apple’s been thinking about multitasking from the get-go. They’ve mentioned it a couple times, at a few key points over the years since the launch of the iPhone, and there’s never been any question that the Cupertino-based company has been working on some kind of multitasking technology. There’s all sorts of reasons why Apple didn’t want multitasking on their device, primarily the concern for battery life, security, and resource allocation. But, there’s also the fact that the iPhone lacks the kind of User Interface generally seen for multitasking devices. The multiple homescreens are great for the iPhone, but unless Apple has created some new UI elements, it might be kind of hard for them to launch such a feature.

Luckily, they’ve got some pretty bright minds bunkered at headquarters. According to the words whispered into the ears of AppleInsider, it seems that Apple has found a “full-on solution” to the multitasking conundrum. Whatever that means, we don’t know, but we can guess that it’s going to be unlike anything we’d expect. The details of the feature, along with the entirety of the iPhone OS 4.0 are under lock and key right now, because apparently the OS isn’t ready for prime time. In fact, it seems that it’s still a ways off. As soon as we hear more, we’ll pass it on.

Cisco announcing new Flip cams next month?

Well, here’s a good one. After coming off a not so life-changing announcement yesterday, Cisco is rumored to be preparing the new line of Flip videos cam (they purchased the company in 2009) for launch sometime in early April, which happens to be, oh, next month.

The Business Insider reports that Cisco will launch a new set of Flip camcorders around the NAB show, which is slated to run from April 12-15. Flip video cams have been wildly popular (and quite a good deal for the budding video aficionado). What’s next, 1080P HD recording? (Hopefully).

OCZ Onyx series SSD offers under $100 price tag

OCZ is a company that many of us are familiar with and the firm made its name in the enthusiast computer industry with some nice RAM. The company also offers a full line of other flash products like flash drives and SSDs such as the limited edition Vertex drive I talked about a few weeks back. OCZ has revealed one of the cheapest SSDs on the market with the first offering in its Onyx SSD series.

oczonyx sg 490x500

The first Onyx SSD has 32GB of MLC NAND for storage. That’s not enough space for most of us to use the SSD only, but the thing will make for a nice boot drive for an enthusiast machine. The best thing about the 32GB Onyx SSD is the price. The little SSD sells for under $100.

For that much money you get read performance of up to 125MB/s and write performance of up to 70MB/s. The SSD has 64MB of onboard cache and is rated for 1.5 million hours MTBF. The drive works for both desktop and notebook machines.

Dell offers PowerVault DL2100 backup solution for businesses

Years ago, I worked for a company that had three servers running different applications that were all critical to the business. If one went down, they were out of business until the machine came back up. The scary part was that they were only backing up once a week and were using CDRs to make the backups. Dell has unveiled a new backup solution for businesses that is much more efficient than CDs or tape backups called the PowerVault DL2100.

The machine is powered by Symantec Backup Exec software in several different forms. The backup device comes in economy and performance versions. The Economy version uses a single Intel Xeon E5520 CPU while the performance version gets two of the same parts. The economy version runs 6GB of RAM with the performance version getting 24GB of RAM.

Storage space for both versions is up to four 500GB HDDs in RAID 5 configurations. Dell claims that the DL2100 is 50% cheaper to operate than a tape backup system. The DL2100 can also archive Windows file systems and Exchange environments. The DL2100 is available now with economy versions starting at $8,600 and performance versions starting at under $11,500.

Carbon fiber electric bike uses frame instead of wires to conduct power

In some urban areas where there are lots of cars and people the fastest way to get around is often a bike or walking. In more spread out rural areas riding a bike to work can mean a trek of many miles. A cool new bike concept with a carbon fiber frame and electric power has turned up that makes getting where you need to go cool and green.

carbonfiberbike 1

According to the designer, the carbon fiber frame is conductive and would be used to conduct the electric power rather than wires. The concept has electric motors between the dual-rims in front and back of the bike.

The concept also uses regenerative braking to generate power for the battery that drives a counterturning axle rather than gears or chains like most bikes use. This concept is a bit farther along than some we have seen, the creator already has a prototype built and in testing. I wonder how the bike protects the rider from the power sent through the frame.

Kanguru whips out Defender Elite remotely manageable flash drive with hardware encryption

Data security is at the front of many minds in the business world. With the ease that data can be copied to and from portable devices today and the fact that these devices are easily lost or stolen means sensitive data has to be protected. Kanguru has a new flash drive that has achieved the FIPS 140-2 certification for data security called the Kanguru Defender Elite.

defenderelite sg

The flash drive is notable for also meeting HIPAA standard in the medical field and Sarbanes Oxley specifications. Kanguru designed the new Defender Elite flash drive to meet the stringent needs of the DoD after it lifted the ban on using flash drives for confidential and top secret documents in the military.

The flash drive protects data with 256-bit AES hardware encryption and offers remote management of the drive. The Elite limits the number of password attempts, has master password support, and can be IP or domain restricted. The drive has a tamper resistant design and integrated anti-virus and malware protection. Pricing and availability are unannounced.

Guitarbud lets you connect your guitar to your iPhone

As close as I come to playing a musical instrument is the occasional round of Rock Band. If you are a guitarist looking for an easier way to record your songs and jam sessions, using your iPhone or iPod touch the Guitarbud device is just what you need.

guitarbuds sg

The Guitarbud is a cable that lets you connect your guitar directly to your iPhone or iPod touch and offers a headphone jack as well for private listening. Once connected your guitar playing can be recorded using various iPhone or iPod applications.

Once you are done playing you can send your music off to friends via email. The cable is six feet long and doesn’t take up lots of space when you are on the road. The guitar plug is 1/4″ and the headphone and iPhone plugs are 1/8″. The cable requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later and works on second gen iPod touch players with OS 3.0 installed.
